ADULT FAITH
Encounter Jesus
The heart of our faith as Catholics is an encounter the Jesus Christ. No amount of teaching c an replace this personal connection. We use a program called Alpha as a first introduction to Jesus and Faith. Alpha helps create a space for honest conversation around some of life’s biggest questions. It is designed to provide guests an opportunity to connect with one another while providing the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, and opinions in a safe and caring environment. Alpha helps bring people together while providing the chance to encounter Jesus.
Alpha is offered throughout the year at the parish over 10 dinners. Guests are welcomed as they are, with little or no faith background. A free meal is served and then a 20-minute video is show about important themes in life or faith. Then it’s time for conversation. People are free to say what they think or feel. No one is judged or criticized. Alpha also includes a day-long retreat at some point.
Guests are invited to repeat the Alpha course and to eventually help to host it. Although designed primarily for evangelization for those who have no faith; it is also good for Catholics who want to be grounded again in the why of their belief. It’s also great if people bring a friend.
FrancisCorps
Some people feel called to live the Gospel more intentionally but not for life. We Franciscans offer a 1-year Gospel experience called FrancisCorps. It’s for young adults between the ages of 21-25 who want to live in community, grow in faith, and serve those most in need. It takes place in Syracuse, NY and provided the volunteers with several retreats during the year including a pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome in Italy.
And its free.

Vocations
If you feel called to live the Gospel more intentionally as a religious brother, sister, priest, or deacon, we suggest speaking with a trusted advisor who can help you discern. You are welcome to talk to one of the friars or sisters here at Most Holy Trinity – St. Mary.
Discerning a vocation is an adventure. It’s important to balance informing yourself, meeting vocation directors and communities, learning about religious life, and then making a decision. Sometimes people get so lost in the search they become stuck and can’t make a decision.
A couple of additional thoughts:
It's not for life—at least not initially. You won’t be “wasting” time if you discern to enter religious life or apply to a diocesan seminary. You will learn a lot about yourself, grow as a person and as a Catholic. That growth is yours to keep. There are many steps along the way to help you discern out. You won’t be stuck. On the other hand, if the vocation you’ve felt called to is truly where God wants you, then you will know too. It’s certainly not easy. There are many challenges, but there are tremendous rewards.
Here are a few things to watch for when discerning seminary or religious life:
-
Pressure: Is the vocation director or community pressuring you to move quickly? If so, run! Don’t trust them. They are more concerned about their numbers than about your future.
-
Authenticity: Do you feel you can be yourself? Are the people you are meeting at this seminary/community genuine? Is it diverse, or are the members like clones?
-
Challenge: Will you be challenged in this seminary/community? Do you feel you will mature in your personality, sexuality, faith, intellect, and service to others? Are you being encouraged to think and to question?
-
Relevance: Does this seminary/community reflect the Church of today? Is it stuck in the past or a future that might never exist? Is it down-to-earth?
